Welcome!!
Welcome to our website! We have compiled a comprehensive resource that is designed to help teachers and parents learn more about the important social issue of poverty. Poverty affects students all across the world, the United States, and more specifically, the state of Illinois. The causes, conditions, and effects of poverty vary greatly from the very rural, wooded areas of the Shawnee National Forest of Southern Illinois to the urban landscaped of Chicago. We strove to highlight the differences between rural and urban poverty within the state, and bring awareness to the various faces of poverty across the Land of Lincoln. Thank you and please enjoy our website!
Thank you for visiting our site! Alejandra and I come from very different backgrounds, with me growing up in deep Southern Illinois, and she coming from the Chicago area. We were both raised in areas of high poverty, but in very different circumstances. We used this as an inspiration to direct our research and we hope you find our information helpful in your own family or classroom.
As a future middle school teacher planning to serve a rural community, I am sure that I will encounter poverty stricken children each year. I plan on using this website as a resource for information in the future, as I hope you will do as well. Thanks again and enjoy! Tammy Pollard Middle Level Education Language Arts and Reading |
Hola! Thanks for visiting our site, we have been working really hard on it! This website has truly been a labor of love: Tammy and I come from very different backgrounds and both understand the importance of the issue of poverty and how it will affect our classrooms.
I am a Spanish Education major, (Middle Level through High School) and am specializing in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). I plan on working in an urban school, most likely in Chicago. Personally, I know I will be dealing with poverty in my future classroom and took this assignment as a true learning opportunity. I hope our resources and information are as helpful to you as they have been to us! Alejandra Villalobos Spanish Education Major Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Minor |
